Campfire Stories: From the Ruins of a Greenhouse ~ Järna, Sweden

August 16, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

A live podcast recording in the burned down community greenhouse at Under Tallarna in Järna, Sweden. Stephen Jenkinson has been interviewed by Campfire Stories founder Mattias Olsson before, but never like this. An evening that is more ceremony than conversation.

Join us in the cracks and shadows at the outskirts of modernity for a talk on ashes, grief and mystery.

“Allies in service to something we are obliged to conjure.” Stephen Jenkinson

“Stephen’s poetry and storytelling. They are an antidote to the anxiety of modernity. With all of my heart, thank you!”  lots of love from Sweden, Mattias Olsson, Campfire Stories

In 2018 we receive an email message, it’s from Mattias Olsson and “I’m a filmmaker from Sweden.” He’d recently made a film An Unlearning ~ my meeting with Charles Eisenstein. At the end of the film Mattias shows Charles  his book case and he then points out that he has Stephen’s (amazing, incredible) book ‘Die Wise‘. He also points out that Stephen is “quite the writer”.

Five months later, Mattias has also read ‘Come of Age’ and listened to quite a few interviews. He lets us know that he runs a film platform called Campfire Stories . The underlying question that fuels the project is “If humanity is headed in the wrong direction, which seems to be the case, how can we begin to imagine what the right direction would look like?”

This leads to several conversations – all Campfire Stories podcasts with Stephen Jenkinson here including the episode on ‘Death and Dying’.

Their talks lead to a collaboration  –  to STILL. This piece of poetry was written by Stephen – and recorded and arranged by Gregory Hoskins – for Mattias Olsson’s film “The Art of Slowing Down Time”.

About a third of the way through, there’s a contemplation about the fierce discipline monastic types take upon themselves to replace the less orchestrated strain of ordinary, this-worldly life. It concludes thus:

So you pray for clarity. And you get it. And it’s too much.
So you pray for mercy instead. And you get it. And it’s not enough.
So you pray for clarity instead. And you get it. And it’s too much.
So you pray for mercy … (repeat to a slow fade)

And so on.

Somewhere in the timeline, the local greenhouse and community gathering place in Järna burns to the ground.

This year Stephen and Gregory will make the trek to Järna, they will gather with Mattias and his friends around the campfire.  You’re invited.
