Winter Bhakti Gathering: Embracing Grief, Embracing Death
featuring the film showing of GRIEFWALKER and Q&A by Stephen Jenkinson, “The Angel of Death”
Sacred ceremony, devotional chanting, spiritual talk, film and special ceremony to embrace death, dying and honour our ancestors (Kalbhairav puja). This one day event holds a space to meet our fears, feel our grief, give thanks for our lives, to sing our hearts out, to dance and to celebrate and to make friends with the unifying force and mystery of Death.
Featuring kirtan singers: Babaji Temple Singers (Hari Pyari), Tim Chalice, Bharati and Dinesh.
About Kalbhairav Ritual: Together we will participate in a powerful ceremony to honour our ancestors, along with chanting to the deity “Kalbhairav” – the fierce side of Shiva that is associated with meeting limits, annihilation and death. We will invoke this energy that helps us to meet fierce tests and transitions.
About Bhakti Yoga: Since Bhakti Yoga has become more popular in the West, people often associate their experiences with bliss and ecstasy. These qualities are part of the yogic path, but they are not the whole story. Any spiritual path worth exploring does not push anything away. Bhakti Yoga gives us the opportunity to learn to love everything, and in that includes our shadows, our decay, saying goodbye, and our own death.
Griefwalker is a National Film Board of Canada feature documentary film. It is a lyrical, poetic portrait of Stephen’s work with dying people. Filmed over a twelve year period, Griefwalker shows Jenkinson in teaching sessions with doctors and nurses, in counselling sessions with dying people and their families, and in meditative and often frank exchanges with the film’s director while paddling a birch bark canoe about the origins and consequences of his ideas for how we live and die. read more
