Griefwalker is a National Film Board of Canada feature documentary film. It is a lyrical, poetic portrait of Stephen’s work with dying people. Filmed over a twelve year period, Griefwalker shows Jenkinson in teaching sessions with doctors and nurses, in counselling sessions with dying people and their families, and in meditative and often frank exchanges with the film’s director while paddling a birch bark canoe about the origins and consequences of his ideas for how we live and die.

Young people need and deserve real recognition of their worth and purpose in life, and a living example of enduring discernment and courage for the hard and often empty times that are upon us all. The esteem of parents and friends can only go so far: elders must bring the rest. Elders’ status as grand people and god people comes from having wrangled wisdom from experience. Grandparents must now be elders even – especially – when no one asks it of them. The proving ground for learning elderhood is learning grief – an enormous challenge in a death phobic, grief illiterate, ‘be all you can be’ time. This is a training for elder-hood for people of all ages. It is for anyone with a desire to be useful to those now inheriting an endangered and often dangerous world, for those who have an instinct and a desire to be an ancestor worth coming from.
