It must be admitted that in the early days when we first dreamed of a college of the courtly and those agile of heart who might one day quit their homeless, uncertain and solitary fear for the future and take on the offer of gathering themselves up into a more antique kind of anti-school (if ‘school’ is only what happened when in your younger days you were obliged to trade in wonder for grey rules and your soul’s poetry for a real job), to learn in such a way that their lives might begin growing a real village-making skill, together, we did not really imagine that anyone would come to the cedar skirted red ger that is our little teaching house in the Ottawa Valley sitting proudly in a field beside the great river of abundance and time called La Bonnechere. Nor did we want to admit that we imagined and hoped for a group of high spirited lovers of the ancient and now scarce art of patience and persistence when facing something entirely new and worthy of learning, but imagine and hope for it we did.
Especially we dared to ask for a time – but kept this impossible thing close to our vest, like a treasure found in the trash heap that maybe no one else would treasure – that such people would, after being courted and driven towards their souls’ desire and kept from their sleep under a full moon learning together something of the mandatory arts of living and dying deeply and well, actually vote with their feet and their hard earned money to return to us for five days at a time to do it all again, and then again.
The old people say that food makes hunger, that the human heart rises up when the longed-for thing appears. That is what we have seen. So, against whatever vestige of moderation and inclination to let somebody else take care of the world and the time to come that might still cling to us, and because so many have prevailed upon us to open up the Orphan Wisdom School’s now ongoing classes for them, we are not any longer able to say ‘No or Not Yet’. Instead we as of this moment have decided to make an altogether new class of the willing which will gather for the first time early this fall, 2011, hereto for and enduringly to be called The River’s People.
