There is a long and jaunty list of admirable wrinkles, optimisms of all kinds, proud extolling of deep and cantankerous ancestries, and an uncommon willingness to go the full route which our present nervy and agile scholars, who in their faithful twice a year migration here to the shores of the Bonnechere River over the last few years have really called the Orphan Wisdom School out from the hesitant shadows of a mostly graceless and unpromising time such as our own and into the blaze and real ardour of what our time might still become, carry admirably and well, all blessings on their roads. But the unaccountable and old time grace of how they have set aside standard workshop expectations, rehabilitation requirements, home life impossibilities and fix-me-so-it-feels-better demands and entitlements for the sake of conjuring useful, antique details and learning unwelcome things about what they know would melt the hardest heart and revive the most collapsed of imaginations, and here and there they’ve done so.
Because of them, and for the sake of a so-far unknown but deeply hoped for cabal of would-be scholars of similar grace who we are betting might be out there still, the convening of a new class for old ways of real human culture-making, the learning of which will itself become a banquet hall proper in scale and style to serve as a home for the particular love of life which our time now asks of us, is thereby mandatory and hereby joyfully decided upon and launched. In other words, we are now calling together from the four corners, seven seas and all the windy places a new cadre of elders-in-training who will begin to carry the seeds of the better days they’ve waited for and worked on. This fourth class of the Orphan Wisdom School, as befits a learning project of this kind of inner scope and enviable outer reach will be taught and given on our working farm. It begins on August 15th, 2012, and it will be known far and wide as Red Sand White Sand People. The 5th class of the Orphan Wisdom School is being hosted at the Hollyhock Learning Centre on Cortes Is., British Columbia, Canada and begins on October 26th, 2012.
So please recognize in this message an invitation to you and your friends, and particularly to your adversaries, to consider yourself both capable and needed to carry the burdensome privilege of doing all that can be done and more still to write a real love letter to this world, the one delicious ready world entrusted to you in your youth, by the noble twin labours of learning and wonder, which is the Orphan Wisdom style of doing business. We ask you to make an initial commitment to meeting twice a year for two years – the same commitment we make – as a beginning, as a showing of proper respect and regard for the teaching and for your fellows. This is a project of real scholarship and soulful labour, complete with reading lists, homework and all the hallmarks of the proper education that is our birth right, where aloof despair might be coaxed into living in the world, bravely, instead. Maybe we’ll see your hopeful face there.
