I’ve submitted to a lot of interviews. Willingly. Like any serial experience in life, some are memorable in their particulars, and they linger long after they and their serviceability are done.
Mattias Olsson has granted me a handful of memorable interviews. To serve the assembling of them into a file of their own I did something I seldom do. I listened to myself. Very quickly I remembered again why whenever he calls I sign up for an encounter. What most compels me is the quality, the articulateness, the sound of his listening. He is very prepared, but clearly he, in his character, is committed to attending, and so to abiding. There is no feeling of being in a question check out line. There is a feeling of being allies in service to something we are obliged to conjure. It is a joy to be troubled aloud together with him. My debt to him is this: he makes me want to lavish eloquence on consternation. I found myself wanting to be worth his time, and his questions. It’s an uncommon gift, a welcome one.
