Hi Fidelity

A few months ago I sat stock still in an upstairs mocked-up recording studio at the farm, for hour upon recording hour, leafing through several hundred pages of manuscript to make an audio version of Matrimony: Ritual, Culture and the Heart’s Work. Gregory Hoskins, my Grief/Mystery partner, was twisting the knobs and hovering over every word on the floor below, working me, holding me to audio authenticity.

The publisher offered the uses of a professional voice-over person, and I considered it. Call it vanity, call it quality control, but I was pretty sure I knew what the cadence was supposed to be, and the inflection, and the pausing, the urgency. And I just wasn’t going to trust those subtleties to a pro.

So, for better and for worse, come September 30 you’re going to be able to get the audio book from the horse’s mouth. If you’re a fan of audio books, you know that they’re another iteration, another occasion, something separate from the text. I hope you like the home-made sensibility of the thing.
