The Awful Clarity of a Mind in Eclipse
July 30-August 2, 2026
Trefacwn, Wales
It’s not much of a secret now that a year and some ago I was in the jaws of a beast of storied strength.
During that time, every few drastic days, I took up a pen and, in jagged script, dowsed my descent.
How one could ever be wrong about a tangle that fulsome, I don’t know. Turns out I was wrong – not about the beast or the jaws, but about the grip.
-Stephen Jenkinson

Stephen Jenkinson has invited Àlex Gómez-Marín to be his guest

I was in a hilltop medieval Tuscan village years back, and I sat across from Alex Gomez Marin, a young man I didn’t know, who was doing what he could with being unnerved at the prospect of introducing, questioning and moderating me. It sounds modest, but it was momentous. His regard for me was honourable and old worldly. And so it was to him I turned in the wake of a sudden diagnostic, unsaintly fury, and we recorded scores of hours tracking how the beast tracked me. It’s to him and his learned heart I turn now to help me midwife this meeting that is part stagger, part stillness, part God, part God help us.

Film Invocation
I have asked Mattias Olsson to craft a film in, for and because of this event. Not a document, nor a record, his film is likely to be something closer to a provocation, or an invocation. Something closer to proof. Or evidence. I’ve known Mattias for a handful of years, and have steadied myself for his lens several times (Watch Murmurings of the Land here). But this will be something neither of us have seen before: a kind of filmic petition to the throne of something divine, something staunchly human, something adversity-burnished.
-Stephen Jenkinson

Mattias Olsson is a Swedish documentary filmmaker and the founder of Campfire Stories, a film platform dedicated to narratives that inspire ecological balance and human sanity. With a background as a still photographer in New York for 13 years, Olsson transitioned to filmmaking upon returning to Sweden in 2007, producing five films for Swedish national television (SVT) and now over 20 for Campfire Stories.
