January 10th and 11th

The spirit of translation. The translation of spirit.

A taste of what we might be in for with Stephen Jenkinson, Andrew McLuhan, and Janeta Kobes January 10th and 11th.
Stephen: “Uncertainty that knows the sound of its own voice: that’s what I think we’re after. I’ve never thought that. But not knowing something isn’t a particular obstacle to wondering about it.
Is it a different brain chemistry than inquiry, for example? And are those two different from wisdom? And is wisdom different from prejudice or conviction? And are there, you know, actual differences in the brain? Someday all the neurologists gonna say, oh, of course. I mean, everybody’s known that. But I mean, we’re spared that kind of certainty for the moment. But what a delicious thing, to be concerned over what happens to you when you wonder. Are you deciding to do it or is it involuntary?
Is it a kind of habit? Is it a reflex? Is it a loss? Is it a longing? And each one of those things, you can ride that horse for some considerable distance, I think. So this is what I imagine doing. And so it’s not always, I don’t think “talking about Jesus”. I mean, there’s a lot of value to doing so, and, and a lot of offense to be had in the matter as well.
But I think what we’re talking about is ‘Jesusing’: not talking about Jesus as much as people might expect. That’s the ‘Jesus as a verb’ thing: a kind of ‘working Jesus’. You could ask: ”Jesus at work sounds like what?’ And part of the answer is: ‘Well, what did he seem to sound like?’ And there’s the seat for your uncertainty.
