If you're not careful, ceremony becomes a fling, a kind of chronic one-night-stand thing that other people collude with you on, and they call it a “ceremony.”

When you have an audience, you don't have a ceremony. And when you have a program, you've banished the Gods and the old people because you don't need them anymore, because you've determined what's going to happen. Now, all your prayers are spoken in the name of advancing the program and getting to the end.
–Stephen Jenkinson, Quote from the 2019 Orphan Wisdom School Little Tent Graduate Class

In former times, when I was well tasked, and all cylinders were firing, ceremony and ritual were just there, behind the Orphan Wisdom School curriculum, the Nights of Grief and Mystery dramaturgy, the Iron God of Mercy Farm’s moral code. And when asked in countless interviews and Q&A sessions how some great undoing of our undoing might begin, I anchored my answers in ritual and ceremony: you start with your poverties, with an unadorned acknowledgement of the ceremonial illiteracy of your times. Or you probably won’t start.
When the people are starving, when they mistake many things for food, you don’t – if you want to be useful to them – give them soil sample readings and farming handbooks. You give them something they can eat, something that is food, and then you slow down. No more spiritual fast food. And then you play the long hand: maybe now you are working for a time not your own. Somewhere in there you’ll need tempered, tested ritual, to get you past the hard days and the half understandings that come with injury and trauma and cultural orphanhood.
What I haven’t done yet, over a quarter century of this kind of work: brought attention to bear upon ritual per se, the spirit mechanics of an orchestrated, lucid and purposeful engagement with the divine, or with spirits of place, or with whatever we might still mean by ‘the other world’, or ‘ancestors’.
So, while the candle still burns, and while I remain able, and for those who haven’t entirely turned away from the hard tuition of such things, I mean to devote the January 2027 Boreal Session The Post, Then the Beam: The practice of ritual, and the ritual of practice.

Stephen Jenkinson has invited Dustin Ryckman to join him at the front of the Hall for the Boreal Weekend.
Dustin is a craftsman of the old world. Especially with wood, metal, and with words. He is a son, husband, and father. Dustin was one of the four young men that built the Great Hall at Orphan Wisdom and has been in on most of the rituals at Orphan Wisdom over the last decade. Including the school, the sit outs, weddings (including his own to LolaJean) and burials.

Orphan Wisdom Scholar and Lead Scriptorium Scribe, Chris Christou will guide the weekend as the MC.

Orphan Wisdom Scholar and film maker Ian MacKenzie will be in the Orphan Wisdom Hall to capture the event. The Livestream image you will see from your home will be the filmed experience.
The beautiful thing about ceremony is it couldn't give 'two anythings' for your habitual way of seeing, because it says, “no matter how you feel, no matter what your opinions are, what your belief system is, we're doing this”.
