The meetings between Stephen Jenkinson and Kimberly Ann Johnson have been characterized by an abiding, urgent concern for the world soon to come. They’ve made equal time for consternation, intuition, inspiration. They prepare, but they do not rehearse. They don’t “set each other up” to say the things they want to hear nor to try to create discord, where there surely could be some. In that way their reckonings are truly alive. A younger woman no longer young, and an older man not quite old. Eldering in real time.
Maybe death and birth are like land.
It’s inconceivable that they could belong to anyone.
Maybe they are not our own, but entrusted to us for safe keeping.
They should be in better shape when we surrender them than when we inherit them.
Birth and death: Bookends. Punctuations. Summoning in and summing up.
What separates birth from death? What binds them?
What do we owe the dead? What do we owe the not yet born?
